Gardening In North-Central Texas
If you live in North Central Texas, you can probably understand my frustration trying to plan something as simple as a vegetable garden. The experts can't even agree what hardiness zone we're in: is it 7, or is it 8? How about 7b? Maybe 8a?
Forget about the best magazines having anything for you. Mother Earth News, Grit, Hobby Farms and Urban Farm are great magazines, I susbscribe to them all...there's just not much on Texas in general.
I subscribe to square-foot gardening for a couple of reasons, #1 being that my back's shot - I just cannot dig holes and planting beds. #2 - Since I'm planting something I'll be putting in my mouth I want to know where my dirt comes from.
Last year My garden was only 64 square feet. I'm not going to kid you - set up for s.f. gardening is expensive, not so much in building the beds, but in mixing the soil - and trust me, you don't want to screw with that or you'll pay for it later with more labor. I tried to substitute and reformulate "Mel's Mix". It was okay, but the soil really compressed and I'm having to amend before I start this year, so in reality, I probably didn't save much money.
